If you are a foodie, you have probably heard the saying, "When in doubt, add bacon."
Bacon gives any dish a natural umami flavour, and you can always make your food taste good with a little bacon. It's the joker of gastronomy.
Being a foodie I can attest to the truth of the saying, as long as you don't overdo it. The purpose is not to make a bacon dish, but to gather the flavours of the dish itself.
All crafts have such magic tricks, and it recently made me ask, "What is the bacon of writing?" What is the one ingredient in any piece of writing that always works?
